The Easter Sunday Attacks on the 21st April 2019: An opportunity for the foreign nationals to bring in legal actions against Government Officials and claim damages as compensation for the loss of lives and injuries suffered.


The Easter Sunday Attacks had taken place in Sri Lanka on the 21st April 2019 at the Catholic Churches of St. Anthony's Shrine, Kochchikade & St. Sebastian's Church, Katuwapitiya, the Christian Evalgelical Church of Zion Church, Batticaloa and the Hotels situated in Colombo of Shangri-La, Cinnammon Grand and Kingsburry.

            It has been recorded that a total sum of 270 victims had lost their lives in these attacks and a total sum of over 500 victims suffered injuries, including a significant number of those who have been left permanently disabled for life.

            Subsequent to the taking place of these attacks a Commission of Inquiry had been appointed by the Former President Maithripala Sirisena to probe into these attacks, and such Commission of Inquiry Final Report dated 31st January 2021 had made findings to the effect that the Director of the State Intelligence Service of Sri Lanka had been privy to direct, sensitive, accurate and reliable information on four occasions prior to the attacks, from an Indian Intelligence Agency counterpart which had not been acted upon. It had also gone onto make several recommendations for Criminal Proceedings to be taken against several Government officials such as the Former President - Maithripala Sirisena, Former Director SIS - Nilantha Jayawardena and several others for Criminal negligence in failing to prevent these attacks from taking place.

            In the context of the aforesaid, the Archdiocese of Colombo, Sri Lanka, has being instrumental and has assisted the several numbers of victims in Sri Lanka to litigate against such Government Officials and claim damages as compensation for the loss of lives and injuries suffered by them.

            Accordingly, in these circumstances, we invite any foreign nationals too who have sustained injuries and/or family members of such deceased victims of these Easter Sunday attacks to bring in legal actions against such Government Officials and claim damages as compensation for the loss of lives and injuries suffered as well.
