Catechetical Apostolate

"Catechesis is not just the communication of doctrine, but the transmission of a living faith, which seeks to be rooted in the heart of the believer, transforming lives and leading to a deeper relationship with Christ"

~ Pope Francis ~

Catechetical Apostolate

The Catechetical Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Colombo is dedicated to faith formation, sacramental preparation, and catechist training. Through structured programs, it ensures that Catholics of all ages grow in their understanding of the faith and live out their commitment to Christ and His Church.

Brief History

The Archdiocesan Catechetical Apostolate is dedicated to nurturing and advancing the Christian faith from baptism to adulthood. This apostolate was born out of necessity after government reforms in the 1960s took over church-run schools, causing a shift toward academic instruction of religion over lived faith. The Church responded by establishing Sunday Schools (Daham Pasal) with the help of dedicated volunteers to preserve and foster Christian community life.

Sunday School Program

Sunday Schools operate in 152 parishes across the Archdiocese, serving over 96,000 students. These classes provide systematic instruction in Catholic doctrine, scripture, morality, and Church traditions. Special emphasis is placed on nurturing a strong Catholic identity through prayer, Bible study, and active parish involvement.

Sacramental Preparation

The apostolate prepares individuals for First Holy Communion, Confirmation, and Adult Baptism. These programs help candidates deepen their understanding of the sacraments and their significance in the life of faith. Parents are also encouraged to actively participate, ensuring faith formation extends beyond the classroom into the home.

Catechist Formation

With over 6,000 catechists, the Apostolate places great importance on teacher training, certification, and ongoing formation. Catechists undergo structured training programs, workshops, and exams to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively communicate the faith. Their role is essential in passing down the teachings of the Church to future generations.

Faith Enrichment Activities

Beyond classroom learning, the Apostolate organizes faith-centered events that engage students, catechists, and families. These include:

  • Archdiocesan Children’s Day – A large gathering promoting unity and faith among young Catholics.
  • Bible Quizzes – Encouraging deeper knowledge and love for scripture.
  • Marian Devotions & Pilgrimages – Strengthening devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
  • Catechetical Leadership Programs – Empowering young Catholics to take active roles in the Church.

Join Our Mission

The Catechetical Apostolate remains committed to forming strong Catholic communities through education, faith formation, and outreach. We invite catechists, parents, and parishioners to support and participate in this mission to build a faith-filled generation.
