The Easter Vigil, the most sacred and solemn liturgical celebration of the Christian calendar, was celebrated with great reverence and joy at St. Lucia’s Cathedral, Kotahena, presided over by His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo. He was joined by the Auxiliary Bishops, priests, religious, and a large gathering of the lay faithful.

This holy night began in darkness, symbolizing the world without Christ, and was illuminated by the blessing of the Easter fire and the Paschal candle—signs of the Risen Christ bringing light into the world. The Liturgy of the Word followed, unfolding the history of salvation from creation through to the Resurrection.

The celebration continued with the blessing of the baptismal waters, the renewal of baptismal promises, and the joyful Eucharistic celebration—the first Mass of Easter. The cathedral resounded with the triumphant Easter Alleluia, as bells rang out and candles were lifted high in praise.

This sacred night rekindled the flame of faith in the hearts of the faithful, proclaiming anew the central mystery of the Christian faith: Christ is Risen! Alleluia!
