Holy Thursday Mass and the Washing of the Feet at St. Lucia’s Cathedral
On the evening of Maundy Thursday, 17th April, the faithful gathered at St. Lucia’s Cathedral, Kotahena, for the Solemn Mass of the Lord’s Supper, celebrated by His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Archbishop of Colombo. This celebration marks the beginning of the Sacred Paschal Triduum, the most solemn time in the Church’s liturgical calendar.
Holy Thursday commemorates the institution of the Holy Eucharist and the Priesthood by Jesus Christ during the Last Supper. It is a day that draws the faithful into the very heart of Christ's love and service. The highlight of the liturgy was the Washing of the Feet, echoing Jesus’ act of humble service to His disciples. This rite was performed by the Cardinal, symbolizing the Church’s call to servant leadership.
The Liturgy of the Word reflected on the Passover, the Last Supper, and Jesus' commandment of love. The Eucharistic celebration was followed by the Transfer of the Blessed Sacrament to a side altar, recalling Christ’s agony in Gethsemane. Adoration continued into the night as the faithful kept watch in prayer.
This Mass beautifully united the themes of love, sacrifice, and service, reminding all of the enduring gift of the Eucharist and the profound call to imitate Christ in humble love.
